The Afterlife of Your Lunch: Why Our Boxes Disappear

You order a fantastic lunch, enjoy every bite, and then find yourself staring at a sad pile of black plastic that will likely still be here in the year 2500. At Catermat, we decided that this simply isn't the way forward.

We want to be your partner not just because our food tastes great, but because we don’t leave an ecological disaster in our wake. That’s why we deliver our catering in boxes that you could, theoretically, bury in your garden after lunch. But let’s look at what’s actually behind this choice.

It’s Not Plastic, Even if it Looks Like It

When our driver hands you your order or sets it out on the table, you might think, "Wait, that’s a plastic lid!" But appearances can be deceiving. Our packaging is made from materials that nature recognizes and knows how to handle:

  • Sugarcane (Bagasse): We use what’s left over after sugar is pressed. Instead of burning these remains, they are turned into sturdy bowls. They hold heat perfectly, don't get soggy, and turn back into soil in a composting facility within weeks.
  • Corn Starch (PLA): Those "plastic" lids? That’s a biopolymer made from plant starch. It has all the benefits of plastic, it's transparent and leak-proof but none of its everlasting flaws.
  • Cellulose: Even our labels and accessories are playing in the "green league."

Why Do We Invest in This?

For us, sustainability isn’t just a marketing checkbox in an ESG report. We do it for three main reasons:

  1. The Circular Office: We want recycling at work to be effortless. Leftover food and the box itself simply belong in the brown bio-waste bin. No more washing out greasy plastic in the office kitchenette.
  2. Making You the Hero: When you order Catermat for your team, you’re not just ordering food. You’re showing that you care about the details and the planet. We’re here to make sure you get the credit for that choice.
  3. A Clean Conscience: The food industry produces tons of waste. We grow our own hydroponic herbs and strive to keep our logistical footprint as small as possible. Compostable packaging is the logical final link in this chain.

A Little Tip for the End

While our packaging is certified compostable, it performs best in industrial composting facilities which means the brown containers in the streets or your office centers. There, they have the perfect conditions (temperature and humidity) to break down exactly as they should.

So, next time you’re enjoying our filled croissants or carrot cake, know that the packaging is essentially just a temporary form of future fertilizer.

It tastes better when you know that the only thing left behind is a great feeling.
