In a world where teams are increasingly composed of people from every corner of the planet, finding common ground can be a challenge. We found ours in pancakes, a dish loved globally, whether you call them crepes, pancakes, dosa, or palačinky.
When we brainstormed how to strengthen relationships among employees from Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria, Japan, and beyond, we realized one fundamental truth: food connects us. It is a simple dish that takes a unique form in every culture on earth.
"Pancaking" is more than just cooking. It is an opportunity to share a piece of one’s culture through a favorite meal. Every country has its own version:
They all share the same foundation, yet every culture adds its own flair and a unique taste of home. We decided to harness this power for team bonding.
Give people the opportunity to not only meet colleagues from other offices but to truly understand their cultures and traditions.
A workshop of this scale required meticulous planning. We created:
Space organization and a registration system were key, as was a voting tool, because at the end of all that creating, a culinary competition for the best performance awaited the employees.
But the most important part came from the employees themselves. Each person prepared a filling that represented their culture and cuisine. Some brought traditional ingredients from home, others chose a modern interpretation of a classic recipe. This personal engagement gave the event its true energy.
The workshop brought together 40 employees from all over the world. Colleagues who usually only communicated via email or met briefly at the coffee machine sat down together. Everyone had the chance to present their pancake and explain why they chose their specific filling.
What started as a cooking workshop gradually transformed into something much deeper -> a transition from a simple activity to an authentic human connection.
The impact exceeded our expectations. Employees walked away not only with a great experience and recognition from their peers but, above all, with new insights into cultural diversity. Of course, they left with a good feeling and full bellies.
Most importantly, people stopped being just names on a screen or voices on a conference call. They became colleagues with fascinating stories, unique cultures, and traditions that others now understand much better.
The pancake workshop proved to be an effective and fun way to build company culture in an international environment. It’s not just about the food it’s about creating a space where people can be themselves and share a part of their identity.
If you’re looking for a way to revitalize your team’s relationships and show that diversity is an asset rather than an obstacle, it might be time to break out the pans and start "pancaking." Your employees will thank you—and they’ll likely take home not just a new recipe, but new friendships and a renewed excitement for work.
